Car: MR2 built 5.7 Dragpak, tire Hoosier light weight radial 9 inch , driver 17 year old experiencing his first non-Gremlin race car. 904 tranny
Track: Epping track rental, Air Temp around 80-85, not sure on track temp Car rolled through water, and burnouts were tried in second gear(he didn't get the RPM's high enough and couldn't get the tire to spin)(which is better than RPM's too high!) Five runs total, he did do one burn out. Results dead hooked every time. 60 foots were all consistent. Anyone else observe something like this? Maybe its a function of a prepped track, and a great chassis. Making me think though. Thanks Eric

Eric,
I have witnessed the same thing. "many" of us may be way over doing the burnout. With today's tires and track prep the old days of a dry hop to just clean them may be all that is needed. In the last few years I no longer do a stationary burnout. I pull through and out of the water, Spin the tires toward the line and stage. Just make sure tires are clean and dry. Doing the above I have won many rounds with consistent performance.

That's what I do with my Pure Stocker. Just spin enough to clean off anything I picked up driving thru the pits.

Had a bracket car with14-32's under it,let a novice drive it ran the same exact ET's to the hundredth with no burn out. He simply cleaned them off. And staged the car. I immediately felt like an idiot thinking back on all the rubber I had removed from the rear. Quarter panels!

Burnouts are overrated, usually when you do a crappy one you have your best sixty foot.

I have had similar experiences after a burnout followed by a lengthy delay for one reason or another...car hooked as well as it ever did. Made me wonder as well.

If you do your burnout and there is a very lengthy delay before you stage ( or when you stage), the contact patch of the tire tends to pick up the tracks rubber where the car was sitting. If I judge the delay to be too long, I usually try to do another burnout.
If the temp of the car is too high though, I won't do the second burnout. I am in agreement that shorter burnouts to clean the tires are all that is necessary unless the track temp is really low.

I watched a gentleman at the Jegs US Open at Indy one year get down to 3 cars in a 20k to win race where he drove around the water every run and did a dry hop. 4.90ish Dragster
