Mineshaft rule clarity from NHRA

I got a pretty good e mail regarding the mineshaft rule from Pat C at NHRA. Here it is.


The field would be the 128 qualified cars, minus the Showdown cars. So to use your example of 20 Showdown cars the field would actually be 108 so the number 55 qualifier would need to be -.850 for the mineshaft rule to take effect. Looking at last year's data it would have been number 51 which was -.964 under.

Hi Pat. Just looking for a clarification on this since INDY is coming up.

What does the definition of the "field" include to calculate this? Is it qualified field or total number that made runs? Also, there is mention of factory shootout car runs not being used to calculate this at events (like INDY) that contest those classes. Does that mean that if there are 20 factory shootout cars, those cars are not counted in the field? Which would of course make it hard for traditionally factored car to be protected from mineshaft conditions. This would be like double jeopardy for traditional cars. Maybe I am reading it incorrectly. If you could let me know, I would appreciate it. Maybe an example posted on line would be helpful as well. Thanks, Jim

So you don't need killer DA or a 30+ mph tailwind to qualify for a mineshaft?
