Last year at the LODRS event in Norwalk Ambrose and crew were waiting out a delay on the track, sitting on chairs in the back of trailor when we hear this guy shout out "hold it". It was Richard, with his ever present camera and he snapped a great photo of Steve,Al and myself just hanging out. A week later an envelope with a glossy 8x10 copy inside ,unannounced, shows up at the shop with a note that said"I thought you guys might like a copy of this" That was pure Richard. If you knew him you loved him. Huge loss for all of us. Bob Huettman

Very sad to learn of this....although I did not know him...I saw him run many times over the years...First time was at Indy...mid '70's...running that "green" car that was
mentioned earlier...he was in SS/F... Later...I saw the SS/O car and noticed that he ran those classic Motor Wheels from time to time...In the Fall of 1998, I went to Trails for that big NHRA nostalgia event and he was there...NOT sure if he had the blue hardtop along...but did notice he had a very clean maroon '66 post car sporting the Motor Wheel "Spyders" for a nostalgic flair..not sure if he was just showing it or running it...it was a "beaut" as were all his cars...might have been the "green" car repainted... We had a nice chat...and he showed me the photos from past years in his trailer...Hanging up was his racing jacket from the Motor Wheel racing team of the '70's...he was real proud of that...I asked the usual questions about running a "big" car in SS..you know...parts breakage, etc...and he was more than happy to go over that...with a sense of humor...seemed like a real upbeat guy... Last time I saw him run was about a dozen years or so ago...either at the Summers...or the Dutch...BTW...I had no idea of his Ham radio hobby...if I did''I would have had a "ragchew" at the trailer...I dabbled in that stuff briefly...as a teenager... RIP Rich....glad I had the chance to say "hello!" Thoughts and prayers to his family..... |
