Well... I've been shopping for rods for two days and it isn't promising. There are only two aftermarket rods listed to be legal. The Eagle CR6358B3D and the C&A 300-383-01S.
The Eagle 383 rod is .994 on the BE width, everything else measures correctly. I even have a new set in the garage I'm trying to sell. Stock BB Mopar is 1.014 BE width. Assembled on the crank and I have over .050" side clearance with the Eagles. That's alot of oil spray. Eagle makes a 2.200/.990 rod with a 1.007 width (a little better), but a wee bit too long at 6.385 (stock is 6.358) that's .027" too long. NHRA states +/-.025. Missed it byyyyyyyy that much! C&A doesn't sell nor stock the 300-383-01s rod anymore. So the only two aftermarket legal rods are either obsolete or doesn't fit correctly on the stock crank. 440source offers a new H-beam with a 1.014 width and a .990 pin, but it's not on the list, yet. This leaves the stock rod. Bob Mazzolini tells me he used to spin a SS 383 to 8400 back in the day with stock rods. Those I have also, but makes me nervous. So class, do I run the stock rod to 7800+ and hope it doesn't come apart? Do I run the 6.385 Eagle rod and hope the oil pan isn't pulled? (it's only .027") Do I run the 440source rod and hope tech thinks it's an approved Eagle rod? Do I ask Brandon at 440source to submit the rod for approval? I'm new to this so opinions would be appreciated. Thanks Gary Weaver College of Southern Nevada Last edited by Moparteacher; 12-06-2007 at 01:45 AM. Reason: no signature |

Use the 440 source rods: machine 0.0155 from the cap end of the rod and the cap itself and the resize the big end.

Eagle .994" wide rod: Your grinding and offsetting the crank I assume. Incorporate larger radii on the rod journals to obtain the clearances you want. Eagle 1.007" wide rod: Same thing as above. If the rod is too long it can be shortened either by machining the big end or offsetting the pin end. If your using Eagle rods they probably are not accurate to specifications anyways. Third: Since your a teacher, you should be able to handle a small amount of beauracracy. Submitt whatever rod you believe is acceptable to NHRA for inclusion on the acceptance list. Make it a class project. That way your students can learn how to politic a racing organization.

I am fighting the same problem as we type. This is why I posted the question earlier of how to get a rod on the NHRA rod list for the 383. The problem I found with the 440 Source rod was the weight. It is 736-738 grams and he only has two sets left. No more will be made with the .990 pin and NHRA will need one. I did not think about bushing the small end as Jeff mentioned. Sounds like we might need to talk.

I've sent an e-mail to NHRA concerning procedure for parts submission. I hope to hear back promptly. Even with submission of the 440source rod, if it's discontinued then the effort is limited. I could re-bush or cut the 6.385 rod from Eagle to meet the rquired length, but it still isn't on the approved list in stock form.
Stock rods are looking better and better. |
