At this point, I would be looking for any numbers on the housing and the original gear set. Is this in the '69 Camaro in your sig? Have you contacted Strange?

If it is truck gear rear pinion bearing( next to teeth) is about .125'' smaller and bearing sets about .080'' closer to teeth(pinion is deeper in housing).

NEW RICHMOND NUMBER IS 79-0029-1
The gear that came with the housing ( the one without the bearing) is a US GEAR 4.88 Set up and installed by Strange Eng. I have 5 other sets of 12 bolt gears and all of them look the same as the Richmond. None of them will pass through the bearing in the housing.

Have you tried looking up the numbers on the US Gear on their website to see which gear set it is?

You should use a press to install and remove the inner pinion bearing.
You do need to polish the shaft for the outer pinion bearing, but only enough so that it slips on and off, with a little bit of force. Are you going to use a crush sleeve or spacer to set the preload?

The Richmond gear is longer than the US Gear. The one on the left is Richmond and the one on the right is US Gear. If I have a choice I would go with the US gear. Looks stronger.

Sometimes with a new part, you have to do a few things. That's how you gain experience. It was a good thing to ask before you damaged something else, in this case, you found it and we all learned something. Thank you for sharing the probable solution with the rest of us.

Hi,
If you polish the front pinion inner race mounting area be careful.... If you make it an easy slip fit, sometimes the inner race will spin on the pinion shaft and destroy your pinion depth shims..... Give me a call at 650 922 0407 I have some tricks that you can use.... Bob
