If all racers (especially the -.70 to -.80 racers) used their heads, they would be the ones with the brake lights on. These racers have no chance of beating the -1.00/-1.20 players unless the fast guys get more HP.
So if these slower cars were smart, they would NOT go faster than -.85 and trigger the "mineshaft" variable.
It won't happen though... check out the qualifying sheet later and see how many don't even consider that they are only hurting their own cause.

Indy required something like a .95 or better to qualify.

You were close, but it was .893 last year @ Indy and that was a no penalty for being 1.20 under race.
