When I bought my trailer I ordered it with the upgraded axles and 8 lug 16" wheels. Money well spent, you cannot buy a 15" tire with enough load rating for the weight we haul or speeds we travel. Also if you do not park under an enclosure you should invest in some covers for your tires while not in use. Those sun rays are your enemy as far as tire life.

I assume you have 3 axles. I had nothing but trouble with the 614 tire 3 in a row and the Goodyear rep who services our fleet could offer no help except a real good deal on some 17.5 if I converted. Alcoa makes a bolt on Aluminum 8 hole wheel that just replaces the 16" rim. Do not need to change studs. After that seems Continental and Michelin seem to have the good setup. Funny 16" two in a row seem great, but 3 just seem to wiggle and cause heat and hence blowouts. About 8 years ago when I converted to `17.5 have not had a tire issue at all. Worst trip was the Indy before I converted we carried 3 spares and had none left when we got back to Louisiana and bought 2 more in Nashville on the way up. Shortest lived 614 I ever had was 40 miles. Went from Memphis to a truck stop 40 miles down I55. All this was on a two car stacker.

Goodyear just announced that they are making a radial trailer (ST) tire, called the "Endurance" here in the USA. Available in both D and E load ranges, they are N-speed rated (87 MPH).

I use the Goodyear 614 GST load range G and have not had any trouble yet.
I do not wear them out I just change them out every 3 years just to be safe. I seem to have more bearing trouble than tire trouble right now. I am going to start a new thread on that issue. Rick Cates Canyon, TX |
