its too bad NHRA won`t help them with horsepower, and they are just about obsolete.I can`t imagine there are enough people who have interest in building them, for it to be a problem. Its a shame. Ray runs the nostalgia series and has fun.

Cool Re: Trailer Killers!

That white '62 is cool, but it has the dual 4 barrel 409 horse engine in it. Must be refactored to get it into G. The 380 horse I was thinking about was the single four barrel hi po engine released in '62 only. 63-65 engines were red at 400 horse at the factory, but the 62 380 was the same engine.

Cool Re: Trailer Killers!

How 'bout a 68 Caprice Estate wagon with a 427/425 horse? What class does that monstrous thing fit and what does it weigh?

Mike in the specs it looks like they have upped the '62 380 HP 409 to 400 HP in '63 and allowed the optional carb and optional big cam from the 62. ..
Something interesting is the '62 380 HP-409 is factored @ 365 NHRA HP and the 2X4 409 HP-409is factored @ 370 NHRA HP.
The 1963 engines with the same engine specs are rated at a 400 HP ( 365 NHRA) and 425 HP ( 385 NHRA)
All are Stick shift... Wouldn't the 1962 409 HP 409 with 2x4's be the one to run? (370 NHRA Factored)

Cool Re: Trailer Killers!

I guess a few persons wanted to check out the specs on the 409- the original cam in a '62 380 or 409 horse engine ended in part #930, it had .439" lift on both valves. It was a carryover from the small port '61 360 horse 409. A running change was the 3830690 cam, it had .507 intake lift, .519 exhaust lift. NHRA let you use it without any horsepower penalty. The '63 engine used the same cam, but it didn't seem to get a horsepower break, the engine was rated at 400 horsepower or 425 horsepower. The only difference between the '62 hi po 409 and the '63 was the chrome valve covers, air cleaner, and dipstick, and the '63 cast iron exhaust manifolds were a cast iron header that did work better than the 2 1/2" outlet rams horns on the '62 motor, but you wouldn't use either one on a race car. The '62 engine and car is the one to build. The two engines allow the OEM head, the #690 casting, with the #583 head as a legal replacement. The 583 came on the '64 400 and 425 horse engine and the '65 400 horse engine. Only difference was that the valve spring seats were deepened and taller valve springs were used on that head to eliminate coil bind and to enhance spring life. They are more rare than the 690 heads. Have fun rounding up all these parts, and building these engines!! Oh,yes, the dual 4 barrel intakes are the same for all years.

it looks like the one, Adger. I think they all need charity, after all, these are obsolete pieces, including 55-57 Chevy's, Fords, etc. If people have this stuff laying around, why not entice them to bring it back out. I don`t see any harm. Maybe I`m wrong, but it looks like it could be done with the stroke of a pen. Like Billy said in another post, Local Track owners would love it.

It's @ 370 all '62 models . You can thank Denny Ford

Go here, and you guys won't have to guess all the time:

-39 h.p. from NHRA is a fair amount of help, I'd say.
Still too heavy for G/Stock.
Ray and Dennis built that car when there wasn't many good tires around, no 3 to 1 first gears, etc. , plus the record was in the 13's. Also , there wasn't a Camaro in every possible class.
You'd break that think in half trying to be competitive in G/Stock , in today's world.

I saw they gave them end of year HP help. They should give them another 20hp and whatever the 62 Fords need too.
Not sure if the Mopar needs help, but why not help all the old iron?
So few of them left. Let them race!
