I’ve always shut mine off at the finish line. Super stock modified motor turning 10,200.

I always put it in neutral and shut off my small block Stockers
at finish if they are turning close to or over 7,500. The Stockers that are still in the high 6000s....I do not worry about it.

Using a clean neutral helps keep the big end of the rods round longer.

I use a PPP shifter in both the El Camino and Mustang. Don't know about a clean neutral, but I nearly always pop them out of gear at the end of a run...never shut a motor off tho.
