OK, back to 2nd gen Bird SS cars. I've seen quite a few '74 SS Birds. I think I've already mentioned the H-O Racing Specialties SD455 SS Bird. I'll have to call it my all-time favorite. That's because back when I started racing, the only 2 sources of Pontiac info I knew of were Nunzi on the East coast & H-O on the West coast.

I bought all the H-O material & some of their parts. They had helped me with info for my Stocker builds. Their '74 SD455 Bird set a new nat record in SS/KA. Their record time looks real slow, compared to today's SS cars. But, at the time, they had the quickest. Stockers now go quicker than the same SS combo did back then. But ya'll know that.

We saw the H-O car run, at the '78 Cajun Nats. Sorry that we didn't get any close-ups. Don't know why, since we did get a close-up of Sonny Ray. Sorry for the poor quality of the pics. But hey, it does prove that the car was there.

H-O also had a white '74. I've read that the red car is now the car that J.B. Clegg has. He has run well into the 9's with it, as a stick car.

Gary & Ann were from west Texas, close to Amarillo. My friend Carroll Caudle was doing some work for Gary & Ann when I met them. He had a maroon ‘61 or ‘62 (not very old then) “TriPower” when I first met him. Fine people. Went over to the Dark Side and built a Hemi Cuda latter. I would expect all old timer racers would know Gary. Bad-assed racer at one time. They don’t come any nicer. Hope he & Ann are still with us.

Got pics of a 3 more '74's. Don't know a lot about the cars or drivers.

If you guys know something about any of these cars/drivers please share.

Wilbert Thornton was .795 under, on this Q-list.

Billy Ingels was .673 under on this Q-list.

Back in the old days , Super Stock did not allow ported cylinder heads . It is hard to race a SD 455 due to the ported head rule . Most of the cars in the same class have engines that have very common , easy to get cylinder heads . There are only around 3000 sets of SD heads even made, including service heads . The price of these parts is super high , and frankly there isn't a whole lot of head porters that can make them work . Much easier to buy a dozen sets of Chevy heads and experiment .

For now, lets move on to early 2nd gen Birds. I don't think very many have ever tried a '70 model. But, beginning in '71, when the 455HO engine came along, I assume there have been several of these '71-'72 455HO cars run in SS, thru the years.

So, can you guys name some of 'em ?

I can't think of a one. But, there have been a few '73's running SS, because of the SD455 engine. Still some running. I've mentioned Russ Abrams and John & J.B. Clegg. Found a pic of Bob Michael in a '73 SD455 Formy. The pic is not very good. Does anybody have or know where to find a better pic of this car, as well as any other SS Pontiac he's had ? Anybody know what happened to this Bob Michael car, or how it ran ?
I bought Bob Michaels car long time ago

OK, I'm gonna try to make a list of all the names mentioned here.

(1) Johnny Duncan

(2) Phil Monteith

(3) Herslow & Morlock

(4) Phil Szupka

(5) Freddy Moore

(6) Bob Bales

(7) Tony Reiter

[8) Bob Michael

(9) Ken Shawver

(10) Monte Howard

(11) Wilbert Thornton

(12) Mike Morgan

(13) Sal---Not sure if that's supposed to be Sal Biondo, or ?

OK, I've mentioned numbers 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12.

I found that the Ken Shawver car picked up several US Nats class wins, with both he & Monte Howard driving. Those stats are still posted on DRC. Assume they probably did good at other tracks, also.

Some of these guys have had lots of cars, including Bob Michael & Phil Monteith, for sure. Both have had Stock & SS Pontiacs.

Haven't seen anything about numbers 4, 5, & 6. Would like more info and/or pics.

Found pics of a Tony Reiter car. I'll post some more pics here. Would love to know what major races any/all these guys have won, including big class wins, & nat records. Especially nice if there is some sort of written or online info documenting their accomplishments.

And again, if I can't come up with pics of all the cars, would appreciate any pics you guys could supply, or tell me a source for.

The 1st pic is the Herslow & Morlock SS car, then the Bob Michael 73 Bird, then what I understand to be the same car after Don Kennedy bought it, then a '77 or '78 Bird with Bob Michael & Bob Peters names on the door, then 2 pics of the Tony Reiter car with slightly different paint.

PS: Last night I added some pics, scattered throughout both the Stock & SS threads.

I did find a couple of more pics of '69 SS Birds.

The first one looks to be the old style small tire SS car.

The next one may be the same car that Keri Angeles Pari has been driving for a long time. But it has only John Angeles on the side. Other pics I've seen have Angeles & McCarthy on the sides.

So, anybody know if there were more than one of these '69's, that John Angeles had a hand in ?

I've read that Keri made the 1st 9-sec pass in one of these Birds. So, I assume whoever drove it before her ran it into the low 10's,

If you are talking Pontiac powered Superstockers, you have to include Bruce Fulpers 428 combo, don’t you ?
