Just accidentally ran across this pic of a '67 GTO big tire Super Stocker.
It is indeed the same car raced by Jay Cason, out on the West coast. Perm number 769. Have never seen another. No, it wasn't quick. But, it ran quick enuff to go rounds, if no heads-up runs were encountered. Mostly, it was just a very rare car to see in the SS ranks. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r1998#indextop |

While looking closer at this pic of the car Phil Szupka raced, I noticed a couple of things.
(1) Writing over the door says the car was a nat record holder for several years running. Anybody know who owned the car, when those records were set, exactly which records were set, and who was driving when the records were set ? (2) I noticed the Vitar converters decal. Younger guys may have never heard of that brand. Don't think they've been around for a long time. I bought one of those for our '68 Bird Stocker, for the 1975 season. It worked great. It was a 9" unit, with around 3000 stall, IIRC. That brand was recommended to me by H-O Racing Specialties. |

I think I've already asked this question. But here it comes again.
If a car will hook up completely, with 9" tires, aprox how much will big tires, such as 14x32, slow the car down ? I know that the tires will be heavier. The wheels will be heavier. The friction of the larger contact patch will have to slow the car some, after it gets some speed goin. I assume that's why drag cars run small front tires, with less rolling resistance. So, are we talkin thousandths, hundredths, or tenths ? Last edited by oldskool; 02-02-2020 at 11:46 AM. |

Got word that Phil Szupka sold his '73 Bird to Bill Foder.
Then Bill Foder sold it to someone else. So, does anybody here know any or all the next owners of that car ? By the way, I just stumbled across this. Says that Bill Foder built the 400 engine that propelled Phil Monteith's 3rd gen Hatari Bird, to Peter Biondo's 1st SS championship, in 1996. https://msu.edu/unit/msuaa/magazine/w97/foderw97.htm |

Last week I attended the GNRS in Pomona. I had the pleasure of meeting Jan, and Art Peterson. Their 69 GTO was featured in the, Drag Racing Then and Now, building. Nice people. They say Hi, to all the racers back East.

I didn't mean to leave anyone out, earlier.
BES Engines (Tony Bischoff) can build a fast Pontiac S/S -er . Gary Herche built Chris Stevenson's 400, although I don't know his current status. I know a few more, but not sure they need the publicity right now ;-)
