It appears that GM has decided to settle the Dexcool class action lawsuit.

It is about time. I have heard this was coming for a long time. Our family owns 4 repair shops and we have done hundreds of these repairs. The best thing you can do is flush your cooling system and install good old fashion green antifreeze. I was blown away after reading this that they did not include the 5.7 or the 7.4 they suffer from the same problems.

That is funny, I flushed all that green stuff out of my 5.7 truck in '97 and replaced it with Dex-Cool, haven't had to touch it since. ![]() And people wonder why American industry and the economy has gone to s#*t, everyone wants to sue over their own problems, caused by their own negligence. ![]() |

It is not negligence...it is a combination of a bad designed intake gaskets and the intake manifold and the effects of the Dexcool formulation. GM has redesigned the 3.1 and 3.4 intake gaskets several times; the latest redesigned intake gasket was introduced in 2003. Also, the intake manifold was redesigned too; the best intake is the replacement intake made by Delphi, or use the aftermarket intake made by Dorman. Tommy Gaynor has confirmed this is a problem that has been happening for many years. I have seen cars under 30K with the leaking intake manifolds and gaskets. Also know of people that took their cars to the dealer to have them fixed, paid the average $750.00 ~ $900.00 cost, if the engine could be reapired, and see it repeat again 15k later. Therefore, the source of the problem was found to be Dexcool. Check out these other sites and educate yourself: http://www.dsengine.com/gmgasket/index.html http://www.zillamotorsports.com/DEX/ |

SSDiv6...do you know the improvements the Delphi and Dorman manifolds have?
I've got a friend with a 3400 and this exact problem, Dexcool in the oil pan...helped him pull the engine last night. He doesn't know there are better parts out there... |

I do about 4 to 6 a month at our shop. The main problem is not the Dex-Cool in most cars. The problem is a combo of the intake gasket design (plastic gaskets) and the low torque the intakes torque at. Fel-pro and GM both have a revised intake gaskets for the 3.1, 3.4, 4.3, and 5.7 engines. They are a metal design gasket with bonded rubber around the water outlets and ports. We have had excellent luck with these gaskets because they hold the torque setting so much better. We have one set on our 4.3 stocker that have been reused 4 times. The Dorman intake for the 3.8 is a great intake for replacement.

I've done plenty of the leaking intake gaskets, just never blamed it on the Dex-Cool, I blame it on the poor gaskets and some of the poorly designed and plastic intakes.
It isn't the coolant. I put Dex-Cool in everything I own when I do the flush and fill, because my stuff sits a lot. It's hard to drive 9 vehicles every day. ![]() |
