I would imagine over 90 % of the machines used at drag strips right now originally started out as production line vehicles with some form of emissions equipment on them ( even if it was a 1960's vehicle with a smog pump )
We should ALL be concerned right now in all forms of motorsports https://www.sema.org/news-media/enew...utmk=261896645 ![]()

I believe this all started with some EPA lacky entering a clause regarding race car conversion into a set of regulations relating to long haul trucks without consulting up the chain. When asked about this during hearings, EPA officials were unaware os the language being discussed and stated they are not concerned with street vehicles converted for off road use. I believe this was resolved, but SEMA is still seeking specific legal protection for race engines to keep something like this from happening again.
Note: The legislation I referred to regarded Glider kits. Big rig trucks sold without engines and then fitted with per-emission motors and driven a million miles a year.

Gliders have re-cycled components. See, you have a truck that is worn out, but the drive train is re-buildable, so you get a new chassis, get your stuff re-built, don't have all of that govt. garbage on it, and go about your business.Nowadays with all of the hours of service rules, ain't no way 1million miles a year. Yes, I love the hell out of big trucks.

I have some customers who buy ONLY older trucks, pre-Def/afterburner. There are plenty of older units that were traded in and deemed 'unwanted'. They turn them in to beauties. Some Gliders too.

I'm glad to see SEMA protecting the right for us to create race cars, but I'm not sure if the suit they have joined is a good place to take a stand.
The company involved does aftermarket tunes for computer vehicles. One of their boxes for Ford 6.7L, the GBZ - E41 Maintenance Mode & Economy Tune 2011-2016 that I saw within the first 10 seconds of looking at their site contains this text: "We know that many people use their trucks for pulling and hard work so the 45 more Horse Power comes in handy....We understand that these trucks are a lively hood for many, so we have taken extra care to ensure that this well rounded tune will be a good fit for any driving style." No, I'm not against tuner chips or boxes. I've used them myself. But the EPA is always going to go hard against daily drivers modifying their emission equipment - so this has a distant relationship to the things we need to build race cars. To be clear, I fully support the act that SEMA is proposing where there is no regulation for race only parts. But it's easy to see why the EPA went after this company. |
