There are various ways to accomplish it depending on the size and shape of the opening .
One method I use is take a piece of .090 aluminum shaped to cover the opening and weld an aluminum stud to the backside . . the .090 is just thick enough that you can put a nice bevel on the edge for a nice appearance.
I've also attached them with 3M panel bonder..
