Carolina Classic Modified Production presented by Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales & Racing Performance Motorcoaches rolled into GALOT Motorsports Park this past Saturday for our first race of the 2025 season. It was an extremely cold & windy day. We had 7 cars tech in early Saturday morning. They were then each P & G'ed for claimed cubic inch by Tech Director, Mr. Dave Ley & each car was weighed before they made their first qualifying runs of the day. Steve Johnson came with a new car for action owned by Tim Freeman, Bobby Duerden, & Mike Harris; a 1985 Chevy Camaro powered by a 290 CI engine running SS/DM. Ronnie Yopp had his 1962 Chevy Corvette powered by a 302 CI engine running SS/DM, Mark Moreland in his 1984 Pontiac Firebird with a 269 CI engine running SS/EM, Brad Smith driving the Gary McKee Day Dreamer 1967 Chevy Corvette powered by a 327 CI running SS/BM, Strawberry Dixon in his 1964 Chevy Corvette powered by a 343 CI running SS/BM, Darrion Houston with a 286 CI in his 1985 Camaro running SS/EM, & Robbie Draughon is his 1966 Chevy Corvette powered by a 358 CI running SS/AM.

Saturday's action didn't start out well at all. Q1 pairings were Yopp running a 8.689 on his 6.35 index (2.339) against Smith crossing the centerline in the McKee Corvette expiring an engine & getting oil under the tires. Brad had an angel riding with him & Jesus definitely took the wheel on this run as he kept the car sunny side up & off either wall. It just gave myself, Brodie, & Jamie a heart attack too early into the season. Next pairings were Houston running a 5.906 on his 6.50 index (-0.594) against an aborted run by Dixon. 3rd set of pairings were Johnson stopping the clocks at a 5.467 on his 6.35 index (-0.883) against Draughon running 5.183 on his 5.90 index (-0.717). Our final car to take the track on Q1 was Moreland running a 5.752 on his 6.50 index (-0.748). The Top 3 after Q1 was Steve, Mark, & Robbie. Q2 action showed 3 drivers improving on their Q1 runs while 3 others didn't improve, & unfortunately Brad wasn't able to return. Darrion improved to run a 5.894 (-0.606), Yopp running a 5.895 (-0.455), & Dixon running a 9.522 (3.512). Johnson had to abort his run, Moreland slowed to a 5.829 (-0.671), & Draughon also aborted his run.

After Q2 was completed, the ladder was now set for E1. Steve would receive the first Liberty's Gears sponsored Top Qualifier Award for 2025 & earn himself a first round bye run. Draughon (AM) would take on Dixon (BM) with Draughon getting lane choice. Moreland (EM) would take on Yopp (DM) with Moreland having lane choice, followed by Houston (EM) received a Competition Break bye run due to Smith (BM) unable to make the call. Darrion was the first one to take his single for E1. He had a .045 RT, ran a 5.936 @ 114.99 mph on his 6.50 index (-0.564) advancing him into E2. Next pairings were Strawberry & Robbie. Unfortunately Strawberry hadn't made a full pull set but forewarned Robbie at the driver's meeting that it was making a full pull in E1. Dixon had the advantage at the tree, .026 to Draughon's .057 but Draughon ran a 5.104 at 135.22 mph on his 5.90 index (-0.796) claiming his first round win of the 2025 season. Next up was Moreland taking the win over Yopp had Ronnie went red at the hit. Neither car made a full pass. Johnson ran a 5.461 @ 121.83 mph (-0.889) on his bye run to advance him to E2.
Round #2 pairings were Johnson DM with lane choice on Draughon AM & Moreland & Houston, Heads Up EM with Houston with lane choice. Darrion had the advantage over Mark at the tree, .039 versus a .072 but Mark drove around him on the big end stopping the clocks at a 5.820 at 118.32 mph (-0.68) & Darrion running a 5.972 at 114.11 mph (-0.528). Draughon was late at the hit against Johnson giving the easy round win to Johnson. Robbie went a 5.138 @ 135.08 mph (-0.762) while Johnson went a 5.518 @ 120.90 mph (-0.832). By Steve taking out Robbie, he also received the Xclusive Hauling/Grading Bounty Hunter money since Robbie was the last race winner at The Dragway at Coastal Plains Park in November 2024.

That sets the finals being Steve Johnson DM versus Mark Moreland EM with Steve getting lane choice. Unfortunately Mark turned on the red light .005 & ended his chances at winning while Steve was .160 on the tree, then ran a 5.442 @ 121.38 mph (-0.908). Moreland ran a 5.792 @ 118.67 mph on his 6.50 index (-0.708). Along with his race winnings, Steve also received a trailer check courtesy of MJ's Custom Printing & Graphics, a Winner's hat sponsored by PSPA, a $250.00 certificate to Hippie Headers, a certificate for a set of spark plugs from E3 Spark Plugs, a 5 gallon pail of F25 Fuel Factory racing fuel, $50.00 Meziere Enterprises certificate, $100.00 Altronics Inc certificate, $100.00 COMP Cams certificate, & a $100.00 Edelbrock Performance certificate. Mark received his race winnings, a small trailer check courtesy of MJ's Custom Printing & Graphics, a $150.00 certificate to Hippie Headers, Renegade Racing Fuel-Ford?s Fuel South East Master Distributor 5 gallon pail of PRO 116+ racing fuel, 50% Zamp Racing certificate, $50.00 Edelbrock Performance certificate, & a $50.00 COMP Cams certificate.

Caleb Beaman, employee of Redline Speed Shop & Robbie Draughon Powertrain Development continued with making our custom CCMP trophies with engine parts provided by Erson Cams/PBM Performance.

Our 2nd race of the season will be on June 28th at Union County Dragway. This will be a stand-alone event as CCRA-Carolina Class Racers Association will not be in attendance. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
