Default NHRA National event entry

I noticed that there are 183 entries in super stock at Indy out of a possible 180 allowed. What happens to the 3 extra entries? Will they be allowed to compete if some of the other classes are short on their fields?

Question Re: NHRA National event entry

The extra entries are usually current and former world chapions and I believe previous event winners.Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Will they allow more than the quota? Or do the last folks that entered go and sit outside of the gate to see if there are no-shows?

Tracy

All 183 will be racing (eligible to qualify). Once they are accepted into the field...... they're in.
The computer takes the first 180 entires that are eligible (by grade points).
Fomer world champs are exempt from this process as well as the defending champ.... they can enter as late as they want (that's how you get more than 180).
These 183 (or what ever the final number is) will try and qualify by being one of the top 128 qualifiers.
Only those 128 will compete in final eliminations. This is a change from previous years where class winners running at least .50 under their indexes would automatically qualify (see prior posts on this subject).

Do NHRA Bracket Finals Champions figure in as 'former champions'? Someone told me that about ten years ago, but I never really heard that as a fact.

Thanks for the explanation Tom. I understand the qualifying proceedure...just wasn't clear on entries. I have seen other races with more participants excepted than what the quota called for and always wondered how it worked.
