I saw this post earlier but wanted to give some thought to my comments. I suppose, this issue would be difficult to test.
However, Good gear and bearing life can be had with a premium GL5 rated 80/90 conventional gear oil. But ,the same can be said for a premium synthetic oil. I think personal preference might be hard to separate from fact about gear oil. Much like it is with engine oil. [smile] Also, For the 12 bolt housing, one quart is plenty of oil for drag racing.
