In 1965 the 300 HP had 1.95 intake valves vs 1.72 intake valves for the 250 HP.

Bob Gipson had a 65 Chevelle that he ran with a 283 220 hp ,327 250 hp (this had double hump heads) and even put the 327 350 hp in it. The 350 hp is not nearly as good of a combo as the other 2. I did see a 65 Chevelle 396 in C/Stick in Florida. Pretty Cool, but not the easiest deal. Bob Gipson's Chevelle is now in Nova Scotia owned and raced by Jody Noble with a 327 250 hp stick combo. Great car and always raced with a stick.

Thanks James, I did campaign a 283/220hp 4sp '64 Chevelle hdtp Malibu SS car back in the day...Actually, it was my very 1st "new" car. A friend had a '64 non-SS bench seat Malibu hdtp w/the 327/250hp 4sp Muncie combo. We both ran 3.70 rears....I never coud get by him at the track....sometimes close, but never got it done...later down the road, I installed 4.10's and started running better #'s than him....doesn't he go out and buy a '66 Malibu higher hp combo that I couldn't touch.....

Yes, the 350 hp 327 was available in all body styles as an option in the 1965 Chevelle. Also available in the Corvette. The '65 engine has a slight advantage of more compression (smaller combustion chamber). Same basic combination. |

NHRA lists all the wagons in '65 as 2s. There were 3-seat wagons in '64, but no 3-seat wagons in '65 although one was run as a 3 seater for a couple of years in Division 5. But NHRA doesn't designate the 2 dr. wagon for '65 as they do for '64. Therefore, I don't believe it's actually a legal combo in NHRA. We used to have about ten '65's in town, and they were licensed as trucks and all owned by the Milwaukee Railroad (back then, Chicago Milwaukee St.Paul & Pacific). I really don't believe any were offered to the general public for sale in '65, and I was told that they were specially built for and delivered to the railroad. In the early '70's a friend of mine bought one from the railroad and wanted to sell it to me. I inquired about racing it, and was told it was not in the Classification Manual, but I could change the front end to a '64 and run it. It may pass through Glendora today, but it didn't back then. The 1965 Chevelle page in the NHRA classguide is unclear about the 300 station wagon. That should be cleared up shortly as I have sent an e-mail to Pat at the Glendora tech dept.
The 1965 Chevelle 300 station wagon only came as a 2dr model while the 300 Deluxe and Malibu were 4dr models. I know as I owned one of the '65 2dr wagons in the early 70's. Wish I still had it today as they are extremely rare with only 1668 units built. Travis (Disclaimer: Opinions expressed by me on this forum are exactly that, my opinions.) |

In '64, the 327 250 hp.had the #520 or the 896 heads, and the Rochester 4GC with the small intake manifold. The 300 horse 327 had the same short block, cam, and had #461 heads and the 459 intake with the AFB. The carb looks almost identical to the rear carb on a 409.In '65, the 327 250 was equipped with the #461 heads. It had the same smll intake, and a 4GC with a Powerglide, and a WCFB if a stick. The 300/327 had the 459 intake and the AFB.The L-79 327/350 engine came out then, and was an option in the Chevelle and the Nova. It would have been possible to order out a '65 2 door 300 series wagon with the 327/350 engine and a 4 speed. How many of those do you think were made?
