Thank you all for the suggestions and ideas. I take it that UPS is NOT recommended?...LOL...I know I have had problems with all of the carriers...But I will stay away from UPS...Thanks again keep them coming. Is there anyone traveling from Florida to Maryland? Doubt it but worth a ask....Thanks

I would not recommend Fed EX, I shipped a 727 Transmission banded to a pallet, which was just under their 150 lb. limit. They broke the bands attaching the trans to the pallet, and broke the trans case. They thought this was ok at delivery.

We send EVERYTHING Fed Ex ground and have not had an issue with lost or broken parts since day 1 in 1999.

What you can do is goto the local menards or whatever and find the Rubbermaid plastic tub that will fit the unit. Wrap it up in moving blankets and then tape the crap out of it. We have not had issue 1 with shipping blocks or transmissions this way.

It is important to make sure you pack any item extra carefully, because if you file a claim, UPS, Fedex etc. will review the box and contents and usually will not pay if they determine the packing was inadequate, (that is their favorite escape clause) so buying insurance can be a mute point if there is a chance they can declare poor packing. I believe I was told once that as a rule of thumb, the item should be able to be dropped a minimum of waist high with no damage to container or contents.

They call it dimensional weight. Its a calculation based on the size of the package and is a BS way to charge you for using space on the truck instead of how much your package weighs

The insurance is another scam that I could go on for days about. The bottom line is their claims adjusters are just like any other insurance adjuster. Their job is to get out of the claim for the least amount possible. If they deny responsibility and void your claim and you walk away and dont keep fighting. It costs the company less money and makes the adjuster look better. The best way to make sure you are covered is to take your item UNBOXED to a UPS shipper and pay that shipper (Be it a UPS store, staples, ect) to package your item for shipping. That way if something does go wrong you can say "I paid you to do it right so this would NOT happen so pay me for my loss". Now this may be difficult with a engine block or a whole transmission but its really the only way to totally protect yourself in the event it gets damaged.

In the interest of full disclosure I have to admitt that I worked for them for almost 10 years. I have no beef with them what so ever. I just moved on to bigger and better things for myself. I will also admitt that I do still use them once and a while for a small, light, low value package that I do not care about when it gets to its destination. If its worth anything, is heavy, or I want it there when its supposed to be there I use Fed EX or Spee-Dee.

We ship by truck. The pallet to use has to be bigger than the transmission. Make mounting blocks so the trans can be bolted to the pallet. The best way to bolt the transmission to the pallet is from the bottom, that way the bolts are out of the way of the forks of the forktrucks.

Take a picture of the the pallet with the transmission mounted on it. Keep the picture for future use. Deliver the pallet to the terminal, make sure to ask the supervisor of the terminal if the transmission on pallet is suitable for shipment. Make sure you record their name and take out insurance.

Remember the most important thing to make when shipping anything is solid and secure "A$$hole Cover"
