Hey Rich, It's nothing that cant be accomplished by anyone ...The problem is a lot of the young guys and some of the older ones, got spoiled by the .4 LED lights . .....A lot of them dont remember what it was like to have to work like crazy to even get a .030 light on a .4 incandescent bulb tree!....22" front tires ,and still having to stuff it in the lights!
Since the 10.90,9.90 or 8.90 et is attainable by anyone who is willing to refine their combination and can use a calculator or prediction program, reaction time ,both driver and car have become the last place where the driver / mechanic/ crew chief can really make a difference.
I feel the same way about going back to a .4 tree as a S/SS racer would when someone finds a soft combo and gets NHRA to pull 20 or 30 HP off of it and suddenly has a car that can go farther under the class index that the racers who have been flogging their cars for years to get to the same level of performance.
I know it sounds harsh, but work on you car, yes, you might have to give up some coin ,but more often than not ,the racers having a hard time hitting the tree are good on the practice tree, but spend no time at the track experimenting with shock settings , 4link, tire pressure, ect.
BTW I havnt been on the practice tree in over 3 years, It became more of a game than a tool......And over the last three races of the season ,my reaction time average was .008. ..this included three .003 rt's in a row at Atco and two .000's at MapleGrove.

They put all those holes in the 4 link and knobs on the shocks fo a reason ya know!
I have to run as much as .080 in the box at the MASGA races on a true .4 tree..and let me tell you it sucks when you have that much in ,when you miss the tree, you REALLY miss the tree!
Agree with Tom, Im all for a .350 tree, maybe even lower! Sorry Fletchburg.

How about a tree for old guys...LOL

I had .050 in the box with my old dragster on a .400 tree at Numidia and was .006 one round. That was the fastest I can ever recall being on a Pro Tree.

Tom my friend you know I know all about not being able to get under a .430 or .440 shallow on a .400 Tree.......I once had 3 sets of front wheels and tires.....and used them to try and adjust my RT's......A little roll does wonders though untill you turn it red.........been there and done that.....

NHRA sent me the poll for SC and SG but didnt send me the SST one . I would like to see them 8.0, 9.0 and 10.0 but I voted for 8.50 and 9.50 through the email from NHRA . I voted on this site for 10.50 and no Scotty Rule , I'm not scared and SST isn't entry level . Granted speeding up the index may be an issue at some altitudes , maybe that could be adjusted a little more for some tracks . I also think that a .400 tree should be a .400 tree not .370 as a .500 should be a .500 . I mean come on guys why the hell do we have delay boxes ? Then theres the mph thing SPEED LIMITS ARE FOR HIGHWAYS AND STREETS ! . I thought racing of any form was about going fast ! So stop complaining . I dont go backwards on anything in life if they turn SST into a bracket race or put a mph cap on it I will go IHRA .

Should all cars in S/ST H/R have a glass windsheild?
Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.........In my opinion

I also think there are a number of racers (myself included) that like to go fast and don't want to slow down. I don't think it is near as exciting to go 140 as it is to go 170+. If I wanted to go slow I would be racing stock.
race a faster class

Billy, I thought Iggy and myself were the only ones in favor of a .350 tree!!
Some of these guys just dont get it , it dosnt matter what you call the tree .4 .5 , .370. If everyone can hit a .000 light and go red at will without having to work at making it happen where is the skill involved?
Super classes have become something that a lot of racers see as something to jump into when they feel like it , and go bracket racing every other time.
Most of the successful Super class racers know that there are serious compromises to be made on a car to be able to hit the tree at any track , in any weather. ....And it's not just about having huge HP or big motors.....I know of more than a few low HP cars with ladder bar suspension that can hit the tree........ ... I've tried to help a few racers with RT's over the years, most only needed to make a few small changes to their chassis setup, but I repetedly heard, Oh, I cant Bracket race it like that!
If you cant hit the tree as it is , then maybe the Super classes arent for you. ...And I dont mean any disrespect to you as a racer or to your equipment, it's just that as a racer who has raced in the Super Classes since their inception, I've seen a lot of changes in the class , good and bad . ....Many good racers have gone back to Brackets rather than adapt to the realities that make a car competitive in the .90 classes.

Cal,

As a new fan, what was it about your first experience at the race,
that attracted you to do more of it? You said you were surprised
you liked it, why was that, what were your preconceived notions?

I feel as though you entered reluctantly expecting to not go back?

I live about 20 miles from MIR. I was a Bracket racer in the late 70s though the 80s
to about 96 when I gave it up. I didn't go to a race for about 6 years, then went to the
Presidents Cup at MIR. I started going back to the track once in a while with Robert Jones and his TS 63 Corvette. in 2008 or so I decided I wanted another car and started looking. I finally bought my 2nd Corvette, and started playing with it on Friday night and Saturdays at MIR. Its kinda like riding a bike, but you gotta learn everything all over again.

Well the Nitro Jam was approching fast and Robert wanted me to bring my 2 golf carts to the track. Dale Koncens who runs QR was on me to enter HR and the car was there because I brung both golf carts. So I entered the race. I never was a big fan of index racing because of the leaving lifting takeing off again, but I figured what the heck lets try it. I had never left on a Pro Tree till that Sat morning. Or for that matter a trans brake in this car. ( I had been foot brakeing the car) On my 1st pass I had a .127 light and ran a 10.897, and I thought it was pretty cool, on the 2nd pass had a .030 light and ran a 10.922 and I was hooked.
Not really sure if it was the Pro Tree I liked or the idea of running heads up. I did also win 1st rd running a 10.92 lifting, I think it was like a .050 light. I lost a super close 2nd rd to Keith Meyer (?) I belive I had a .038 to his .030 I ran a 10.907 to his 10.904 losing by .011 about a ft at the stripe. I know I have a lot to learn about index racing, getting the car dailed in with the new motor, which should run in the high 9s, learning how to throttle stop, timers ect ect ect.

It looks like 4 or 5 IHRA events, and possible 3 to 4 NHRA events. and possible a index series at a track near you. LOL
