Before there was a super gas class, Bobby Brooks was one of the big "hitters" in bracket racing. Bobby Brooks, Johnny Labbous, Don Young, Larry Doggett were all seen at the big bracket races. I saw Bobby many times at my home track, Brainerd Optimist Drag Strip. I took this photo in 1976 at the first annual NHRA Div.2 Bracket Finals held at Southeastern Dragway in Dallas, Georgia. His rear wheels were made from widened Olds Toronado wheels. The Marvin T. Smith photo was taken in 2005.

Wayne, is this the Bobby Brooks from Savannah? I see it is now in the back window of the first picture Fountains, Mullets. I used to be from Vidalia, GA. and knew them personaly Ralph and Boddy Brooks. They were painters there and ran the local dragstrip in Savannah. Great guys, good friends of mine same as the Fountains . The Fountains were the family that ran Vidalia Drag Strip in Vidalia with Harvey being nicknamed Mullet..John, Harveys brother had a Angla, (MP), the same time as Bobby and both ran A/G back in those days....If not mistaken Bobby Brooks Jr. still runs the car in Super/Gas????Not sure if Bobby and Ralph are still with us, but will try to find out..
Thanks for posting the pictures and would love to see more if you have them...... Last edited by FrankChastain; 03-27-2009 at 06:06 AM. |

Thanks, Wayne, for sharing that early photo of Bobby's famous ride. I used to admire that car in the 80s, and when I reconnected to drag racing a few years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Bobby, Angie and their energetic terrier. Super Gas racers are very hospitable people, but none more so than the Brooks. Drag racing in Division 2 has suffered a great loss.

Frank, The Ralph and Bobby that you are thinking about are Ralph and Bobby Miller.Ralph passed away several years ago but Bobby to my knowledge is still with us. I first met Bobby Brooks racing at the Savannah Drag Strip back in the early seventys he was always a super fine person and I will miss seeing him at the races. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
