Looking for some tire help
I'm looking for any help or suggestions on some rear slicks....I run a S/ST Camaro with a 15x15 wheel and currently running a 33x15 Hoosier. I've always run right around 8psi.
My problem is I seem to kill the side walls in only about 60 passes. I have roughly 300 lbs of ballast in the trunk to make s/st weight. Is this why I kill the sidewalls so fast? I've never run any tire other than Hoosiers, but I'm open to any other out there if I can get more life out of them without sacrificing 60' times and performance. Any input is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks for your help in advance! Mike Boehner S/ST 5167 |

Re: Looking for some tire help
I run a 90 Mustang right at 2850# on 28x10.5's and can get between 100 - 150 runs out of a set of tires, and run between 7.5/8.5# air in them depending on the track...
May want to try a stiff sidewall tire if you can find them in your size... Also, 300# of ballast??? not all bolt in I hope...

Re: Looking for some tire help
Thanks for your help and input. I figured a stiffer sidewall would help, but I don't have the time or money to test a bunch of tires. Was hoping for a few suggestions of things you guys have tried and learned. Thanks again!

Re: Looking for some tire help
I would put a set of stiff sidewalls on it. I switched to stiff sidewalls on my 10.90 car, 68 Camaro that weighted about 3100. Made the car more consistant, quicker reacting, and went from 100 passes to 200 passes out of a set of the Goodyears. I kept the 14.5 x 32 stiffs on it the last couple of years I had it.
You might be able to run a little more air pressure also... on new tires I would try 10 psi and see what you get. Good luck. Ken |

Re: Looking for some tire help
Ken,
Thanks a bunch for your input. To be honest with you I was leaning toward trying out some good years, unless I got some feed back that suggested another direction. Do you have any idea what compound? Thanks again! |

Re: Looking for some tire help
If you aren't running tubes you might want to consider them. They helped my reaction time.

Re: Looking for some tire help
I think they were D5 compound - 1672's, sold that car about 5 years ago... but I would not be locked to the Goodyears... They worked very well for me, but Hoosier and Mickey have good tires also. Look at who has the size you need, in a stiff wall.
Also, as others have said, tubes are an option. I ran them for a while, but got away from them. Pros and cons to tubes... They do stiffen up the tire some, and do not leak down as bad, but always risk tearing, and the added weight. Some say harder to balance the tires with tubes, etc. I always soaped the insides of my slicks and ran without tubes for the last several years, both on my big tires and the 9" stocker slicks. Good luck. Ken |

Re: Looking for some tire help
My opinion: you will get many more runs out of a set of Mickeys. I had a set of Goodyears on my car once and wore them out in 60 passes. Put a set of Mickeys on it and i can go 150 no problem. Also, with Mickeys, you don't need NEAR as big a burnout. (this is just from my experiance). I have a 3200lb 92 Camaro that I've found 10 lbs works best with. Last year switched from regular to stiff sidewall and was very impressed with the results!! Much more consistent 60'!! Give Mickey Thompson a try, you won't regret it.
