Default Park gear trouble.

I had my PG "freshened" and now have a problem with park. On an 10% incline and when tightening the tie downs it will not hold. I now use an chain and binder as "back up" on the trailer up front and back. Without the back up the car acts like I am towing it in neutral. Money is tight so I can not afford a new trans and the freshener says no warranty on racing trans. I left his name out on purpose (in Conn.).

Find yourself a reputable shop and describe the problem, they'll probably help you. It sounds like a linkage problem, but given someone who has so little pride as to not offer ANY warranty has been in it, I can't say for sure. Just for the heck of it, check your linkage adjustment carefully.

When setting the linkage use high gear on the setup then check park before placing the linkage back on. Put the trans lever in park then put the shifter in park and see if the two line up and go together easily. If not you may be using the wrong hole in the shifter linkage on the trans. Most of the shift levers on the trans have several holes so make sure the setup is in the correct hole for the shifter you use. This is the most common problem.
If the issue is still the same and will hot hold park I think the parking paw spring loaded engage lever inside the trans is not placed correctly. This can easily be fixed by pulling the pan only and working on it in the car.
Try and see.
If the trans works other than park the linkage inside is probably the issue if the shifter linkage is correct.
Remember to use high gear to check the setup then to Park.
Good Luck and if you still have the issue I can walk you through the fix on the internals on the phone when you are under the car looking at it if needed.

Like 63Vette said, check the linkage adjustment first. ......This also can becaused by a crack in the "rooster comb" where it clamps on to the shift shaft. ........This is becoming far more common now days ,as the clamping bolt has been tightened ,[or overtightened ] many times on most PG's...........The trans will shift all the detents correctly ,but the extra force required to overcome the spring pressure of the park plunger will twist the rooster comb on the shaft.....Easy repair ,even for someone not familiar with automatics, only pan and shaft removal required. .............Tom

Thanks for the information 63corvette. It sounds more like the pall problem as every other gear is dead on. I have a friend who lives just down the road who has a transmission shop who will help me for free. He has about 25 years experinece with trannys so I'll take it to him as I don't have much space to work on it.

Your problem might be the fact of tieing down your car up against the park pawl itself. That puts a lot of stress on the park pawl and the case. I put the straps on loose then put in nuetral then tighten straps down tight.

That's good news, I was hoping that you would get something like that arranged. He may be able to fix it just by dropping the pan and the valvebody.
