Wagon fuel cell

Is it legal to install a fuel cell in a station wagon? I have a 1966 Chevelle Malibu wagon and the current gas tank has a leak, thought while I'am at it might as well put in a cell if I could.

You can recess it into the trunk floor, and hinge your cover, and secure it with winged Dzus buttons or thumb screws.

We mounted our's along with weight box in rear spare tire compartment...used a couple regular Hood pins to hold down. I have seen several wagons with battery boxes and cell mounted in rear in plain sight... I felt better with my kids secured under metal cover.

I just had a 5 gal cell put under the rear floor area in my gremlin.It's an aluminum one with
a trap door to access the filler cap.You need to enclose the overflow where it pertrudes into the car.Legal and safe.

My brother installed a fuel cell in his Malibu wagon. He used an access door kit # 015070 from https://www.appliedracing.net/. Also be sure to install a ground strap from the frame to the metal ring around the fuel cell cap , Tech will be looking at that item. Kenney Kelley

I have a '68 Chevelle wagon, and it has a hinged cover over a storage compartment in the rear portion of the car right in front of the tailgate. I put a five gallon aluminum cell in it, the lid closes over it exactly right, and I had to cut a rectangular hole in the floor of the compartment to allow the sump to hang through. The line to the pump(#8 AN) goes out the rear below the floor level, goes through the filter and into the pump, then 1/2" aluminum line extends forward to the stock location,where a #6 line goes up to the fuel sample valve and the fitting for the fuel pressure gauge.I built a guard out of steel plate to cover the sump and protect the lines. When the compartment cover is closed,you wouldn't know there's a cell in that car unless you looked under the back.It's never been a problem in tech, and it works fine. I raced a '66 Chevelle wagon about 25 years ago, but it had the stock tank and that's what we used.I imagine those aren't available new or reproduction now, either.Good luck with your project!!
