Just wondering what the best battery to run if you don't run an alternator, that is with a 12v battery. Is there any big gains to be made with a 16v battery.

If I were you I would try it before you do away with the alternator.
On my car it's good for 1 tenth the wrong way.

Art, have you tried with a 16V?
I have a new "Performance V" 16V but as my car is under construction, I can't comment on battery voltage life. My research was that it would take a lot of runs to get down to 12V and I checked all the amps my car was using and one 16V was more than ample. The fact I have a 4-speed helps as I don't have all those driver aides with an auto trans which use up a lot of energy!

Jeff I haven't tried the 16 volt system. It might be enough. I could eliminate some of the current draw, My fuel pump is total overkill (think thats where most of the ET is).
There are a few other things I want to do first. Real intake manifold. And a final drive ratio better than 3.73

The '87 Shelby Daytona Z I raced in A/FS had a factory Getrag 5 speed with 3.91 ratio. As I recall, with 20" slicks it went through the lights somewhere around 6200 in 4th . Yours is a stick isn't it?

No both Tim and I run an auto. I'm just starting to get in my powerband at 6200 I cross the line at about 6400 at 105 mph. Still using the 20" slicks

I use powermaster XS 16v battery with no alternator.. I haven't had an issue yet and I can definitely go 2 rounds without charging but I usually put the charger on after each round. Don't forget you need a 16v charger for that. I can say that at tracks like Englishtown (or any other track where you can't roll down the staging lanes) where you start your car roughly 20-25 times from when you leave the trailer til you return it still cranks great after each run. Also, your starter cranks like 100mph faster you'll hear it! As far as power gains, they say the spark is hotter but I built a new motor this year so I'm not sure about that.

I have the d1000, but I think they call it the d1600 now. Same thing, heavier than the S though but more power. Also before I purchased, I checked with Autometer and Aeromotive to make sure the tach and my fuel pump would work with 16 volts and they all do. My marker lights and headlights are also working fine, they were nice and bright the other night at cecil which was crucial driving around those pits in the dark! No need for a step down resistor.
