Last month I ordered a new dually pick up. When my wife started to inquire about insurance rates she was told by my current policy holder that they could not insure this vehicle because of the GVWR. Has anyone else had this experince? How about resolutions to this problem. I know there is a large number of racers that have this type of truck. I found this hard to believe.

Mike, I think it is fairly common in many states to find that they require either commercial or farm tags to allow you to make use of the GVWR of one of those trucks. Most standard policies do not cover a vehicle with commercial or farm tags.
I've always had either farm or commercial tags on my crew cab dooley Chevy trucks, and they did require a policy change. When I got rid of my last truck like that, they changed my policy again. Never had to change companies, or for that matter, underwriters. But I have had to have an entirely new, different, and/or separate policy.

Mike what state do you live in? I tagged my dually for 20,000 lbs and it changed personal property tax but State Farm did not ask any questions, and rates did not change. I am in Kansas.

I'm in Florida and I seem to recall that Geico wouldn't insure a dually many years ago. But I checked back while shopping around several years ago and they allowed it! Like commercial vehicles, the tag renews in December, not in the month of my birthday even though it's registered as a personal vehicle. .

In Michigan, our 1 ton crew cab Chevy dually registered and insured like any other car or truck. No special paperwork was needed.

I had trouble with my old 1976 dodge flat bed a few years ago, I was told that if it had a pickup bed it was a personal vehicle, If it was a flat bed it was a commercial vehicle. Big difference in rates. The new (1998) has a bed and isn't a problem.

I had the same problem a few years back. The insurance company I had "Hartford " insured my 92 dually but when I went to add on my 97 they said they couldn't insure it. When I asked about why they insured the 92 they said they made a mistake and canceled it on the spot. I changed to Liberty Mutual no problem and last yeatr switched to Allstate and saved a bundle.

Rod, you are right, I tried to get Hartford in Ohio and they do not insure duallys. The excuse I got was they are considered commercial vehicles. Really ??
