If I'm towing a car on an open trailer and the trailer has passenger car tires on it,if I'm stopped by law enforcement (police, state police,DOT) am I in compliance with the law?

Depends upon the law in that jurisdiction.
I wouldn't do it anyway, an open trailer should have at least load range C truck tires, after all the trailer and car together weigh more than the car itself, so you need better tires than you would on the car, for any number of reasons.

if you are going to PA, from what I hear, they also look at the date on your tires. Can't be over 2 years old.

Reason I asked was some brain sturgeon on another site posted that he's used pass. car tires on his trailers for 25 years, with no problems. He has some pics of a few very nice AMC cars.I hope he tows chevies around instead of the AMCs.:>):>)
Chris,if that's the case just about every race car and other trailer would be in impound now.

Ed,
I think if you don't exceed the rated weight carrying capacity of the tires there shouldn’t be a problem..... I guess that he would have to have your trailer taken to a weigh station to confirm the weight... Seems like a lot of work to issue a ticket... I towed an open trailer for years with passenger car tires with no problems.... Just air them up to the max rated pressure.. Bob

Ed,
I agree with Bob , I have towed with both car & trailer tires and found no difference ... Just use a good tire & watch the tire pressure ... How's your bullet coming ? When we going to see the AMC back on the track ....

I would trust ANY top line trailer tire over pass.car tires only for the fact that the trailer tires have a stronger sidewall to dissapate and stand up to the higher sidewall temps
you experience with trailer towing. My opinion only Dave, the engine is patched together again.I'll be at Englishtown next week.Tested it this past Weds. night.Didn't run what I expected.I'll see if I have enough for the "wild card" class runs next week.

Ed,
My thoughts(for what it's worth), on your subject is the same as I was told regarding how I purchased my truck. I have an F-350. I could have an F-250 with the same motor and trans and axle ratio and pull the same trailer of 10,000lbs. The difference is IF I am involved in an accident(not pulled over and checked), one where someone else runs a red light and hits me they are at fault, right? Only if my truck is the F-350 with the sticker in the door that says I can tow 11,500lbs. If I have the F-250 that says I can tow 8,500lbs the accident becomes my fault. Insert the fact that you have passenger tires on your trailer and it may become your fault in an accident, I don't think the cops want to get that picky in just a stop and write you up. I do agree with you though, I am going to have what is best for the situation. Good luck with the new motor, I want to see you out whipping some new car butts. Just my thoughts.
