I am looking to install an oil accumulator in a BBC stocker. Anyone have any recommendations on setup or manufacturer?
Thanks, John |

Canton. If you get a solenoid controlled valve, you can use it for a pre-oiler, too.

I also have the 3 qt Canton accumulator. I was able to mount it on the left fender skirt. I used the Electric Pressure Control Valve Kit #24-273. I found out that the 20-25 pressure switch was too low and the pressure of the oil when the accumulator was activated would be enough to exceed 25 pounds which would shut the valve back off. So when activated it would turn on and shut off about 3 times every second. The 35 to 40 pound switch solved that problem. I also purchased the sandwich adapter from Canton and connected a 90 Female Jiffytite -10 fitting with the 1/2 NPT male to screw into the adapter (JIF-51808JE) from Summit Racing, I purchased a push to lock hose barb Male -10 plug with no valve (JIF-52510AP). I used a small length of Russell blue push to lock -10 Hose twist lock (RUS-6344000) hose. Finally I used a -10 push to lock Russell hose end at the accumulator switch with female flared end attached to a 1/2 male NPT flared fitting.
On wiring I found the a manual switch was just one more thing to remember each time I started the car so I wired it directly to the ignition rocker switch. Each time I go to start the engine I flip on the ignition rocker switch watch the pressure build and then start to drop and then after about 2 to 3 seconds flip the starter button. One final thing is I have a RacePak with Oil Gauge. I programed the gauge to activate a small thin red warning light to come on at 20 pounds. I hope that gives you some ideas. I have had this for 2 years and really like it.

What is the idea on using a Accumulator? Is it to help with dry start or is it a way to run less oil in the pan but have the extra in the tank in case of oil starvation?

There's a lot of cars that will drop down to zero oil pressure when hitting the brakes at the finish line. An oil accumulator will curtail that issue and go a long ways to saving the engine.
And although I've never had an oil accumulator, I'm sure there is some performance available by running the pan with less oil. I'm putting one on my engine for oil pressure stability and the pan will be full.

it works as both ,, depending on how you have the solinode hooked up to your ignition or seperate switch ,,the accusump system has presure and oil stored ,when you hit the switch the stored oil and presure will pressurize the oil pump and galley suppling the engine ,you will see oil presure on you presure gauge before you even crank the engine, if your in a heads race and pulling all the stops out you can get more aggressive on lowering the oil level in the pan , there is a hobbs switch on the solinoide that will activate if presure drops below the presure that the switch is set at (25-50 psi) and will supply the oil pump ,, real good insurance to have ,, you can also have a light tied into it to let you know when and if its triggering during the run gmonde

Bob,
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Very helpful. Do you find the sandwich adapter adequate? I am sure you get the full picture with the rackpak sensor and recording. Looking back I also found this old discussion. http://classracer.com/classforum/sho...il+accumulator I am just wondering if there an added advantage to plumbing the accumulator to the front of the block, maybe Alan can chime on any updated thoughts or strategies since that thread is about 2 years old. Thanks everyone, John Quote:

Make sure the solenoid operates properly after installation. I have an older version (Mecca) of the accumulator Canton sells (looks identical except it is black) and really like how it screws together instead of those big, nasty snap rings. I purchased a replacement solenoid from Canton for it. Long story short, I was told both Canton and Moroso got away from the GOYEN brand solenoids which turned out to be a big mistake. I know Moroso has since gone back to GOYEN valves but can't speak for Canton. I use the Moroso #23690 sandwich plate on my dragster and have had absolutely no issues with it at all. Good Luck!
