Default Ford Racing

There is a really good article in the new Hot Rod magazine about Ford and their contributions to drag racing. It talks about Ford's shift away from the pro classes and their focus on sportsman racing which I personally think is great. One of the things that I noticed was a picture of the 1964 Galaxie lightweights at the Winternationals. Because they were so much faster than any other stock eliminator cars and that only 50 were made NHRA put them in a separate class and for 1965 made the rule that 500 cars had to be produced for stock eliminator. This thread is not meant to bash Ford, because I really think of all the American car companies, they've got it going on. I love the 2015 Mustang. The rule of 500 cars made for stock should of never been changed. The reason it was changed in 1965 was valid then and is still valid.

All it would of taken was 5 or 6 FX classes and everyone would of been treated fairly. The manufacturers then would of had incentive to put their cars they sell to the public in the guide and I think we would of seen more new cars and some of the older cars that quit would still be racing. I know this has been talked about for the last 5 years on this forum, I just thought I would add some historical perspective.

Seems like a good place to repeat the rumor that I heard recently; Pro Stock has about 2 more years in it's current form. Then they will go to something similar to the Factory Showdown Eliminator type cars like they run at the U.S. Nationals. I image the rules would be a little looser so they have low 8 second cars. The factories would love to have something closer to a factory built car I'm sure.

Greg, I agree completely about the 500 rule. Why NHRA did not put the cars in S/S where the 50 car rule was already in place is beyond me.
