I am not talking about wanting to build one or race one I am talking about as far as a spectator understanding who wins and why.

All comp classes have an index. They run off their index. In qualifying they can go as fast as they want. Like this weekend at Charlotte the top 7 are -.67 under there index. Now in eliminations if they go more than-.50 under they get a cic penalty. So example someone's index is 9.00 and they run 8.45 and win the next round there index would be 8.95. So they lose .05 if they go -.60 under or more they get a permanent hit on there index. I don't run comp but love the class. If I posted something wrong someone will correct me I'm sure. Ed

The only thing that I would explain further is that, during eliminations, the CIC (Competition Index Control) penalty is equal to the second digit after the decimal point of a run more than .50 under the index. For example, a run of .51 under incurs a penalty of .01 for the next round, a run of .56 under incurs a penalty of .06 for the next round, and a run of .61 under incurs a penalty of .11 for the next round AND .01 permanent.

Heads up(no breakout) racing is what Comp Eliminator is once eliminations start. It should not be confused or lumped into the same category as the "Super" classes as it is totally different.

Comp racing is a very interesting class. I really don't think you could call it heads up. Like everyone has explained it is run off of an "index" and handicaped starts. I don't think index to index is what is traditionaly called heads up.
I know I'm going to catch hell for this, but it is just another form of shoepolish racing. Instead of having the shoe polish in your hand NHRA does in the form of the CIC. (Competition Index Control) It is a very well laid out application of the CIC by the rules. Go too fast, as the rules dictate, and your index changes. There really isn't any shoepolish, it's INK in NHRA's index books. It is that simple, except it takes a large application of money and a huge amount of work & smarts to be able to go too fast. Go too fast to win a round and you can hurt your chances for the next round, unless your holding power, or worse yet you can hurt your chances of winning in that class until you step your program up. It's the Sportsman version of Pro Stock.
