Ss/comp Button Clarification

After reading, re-reading the new rule and viewing the picture on the NHRA web site:

1. The 3 inches of travel is from the micro-switch activation point or point of contact to the top of the button.

2. The 5-0 button will have to be considerably shorter than 1st thought because the activation point where the micro switch attaches is at the bottom of the housing using up travel that is not really travel but is considered travel the way the rule is written.

3. The accepted list of switches refers to the (micro-switch) itself. For example the button in the picture has a metal frame that the (micro-switch) attaches to. You will have to have an approved (micro-switch)not the whole button assembly itself.

fyi .. I just found out that mandella got his 5-0 button...approved by NHRA with some changes from the first model ... so those of you that have his button might give him a call to find out what it takes to make your existing one legal

I was told that from the point the 5-O button clicks to activate there should be no more than 3 inches of travel & less than 1 inch of shim in it.(the shims are considered delay) Not a problem for me.. I had a bunch of the shim rings in mine & that means unused travel. Mine now has a shorter shaft in it. I guess I will know, for sure, when I go through Tech.

NOTE: You CANNOT just shorten your shaft to 3 inches of travel. Even though the wording makes it sound like you can. The measurement that NHRA uses and checks is from the activation point of the microswitch to the top of plunger. So if you just shorten your shaft you will still be too long according to NHRA's eyes.
