Lets see. Five national finals, two wins. Many national records (tore down for each and was disqualified twice). D4 Stock Championship Runner-up,
More than 200 bracket racers (showed a profit in 1975 and 1976 on my tax return), AHRA National Championship Runner-up in 1977. Racing interrupted from 1979 to 1988 due to assignments to England. Ran D4 from 1989 to 2000. Set one national record and was early runner-up many times. Won one bracket race. Did not get the Maverick until 2018. Have set four national records ( was DQed at Norwalk for a head gasket that was .009 to thin) have made it to the third round several times. My goal for 2025 is to end the year with the records in R-T and U/SA. Win if I can. I will always be humble in victory and gracious in loss. As long as no ones dies it not a big deal. I race to challenge myself. Now, if I was in charge this is what would happen; You would get two times trials, your dial in would be your best run (no break out allowed), however a heads up would be who get there first. Their would be no qualifying or pairing. All racers would be called to lanes 1-4 and the head of staging would direct you to each lane as you arrive. You would have 20 minutes to get to the lanes or you will be not allowed to race. At the head of staging there would be a official who has 13 playing cards each that are numbered 1-4 for a total of 52. The first card would be pulled and that number would be pulled out and placed to one side. This is the car that will get the bye if there is an uneven field. One bye per competitor. Then there would be one card pulled and that lane would be pulled and placed in the left lane. the second card would be pulled and that lane would be in the right lane. If, for example the two cards that are pulled are for the same lane the first card will go to the left lane and the second would go to the right lane. No game playing. You came to race. Lets get serious. Throw the shoe polish away and see who the BIG DOG really is. Oh, by the way, the cars in the semi-finals will be torn down and be made the record holder for that class. WOW, will I get another 8 pages of opinions?? Sarge |

Your fastest run will be your dial in.
So do you lift at the 1000 or short shift time runs ![]() Tom Flowers E/SA. 3860 |

I was watching "NHRA TV" a couple of weeks ago when they were showing races from the 60's.
They were explaining the handicap for Stock and Super Stock... the announcer said the handicap is based on the National Record for the class. For example, the car in the left lane is in a class where the National Record is 10.15. The car in the right lane is in a class where the National Record is 11.15. The car in the right lane gets a 1 second head start irrespective of what ET either car runs. Is this how it was back then? If so, why the change to dial ins? I may have misunderstood as I was also reading emails on my laptop at the time... |

1975 they had an index system and if you were faster than your class index you were allowed to dial faster. Example: SS/KA index was 11.38, that?s the ET you had to use for handicap. If your car ran 11.20 you were allowed to dial that but I believe you were stuck with that the rest of the race. I also believe if you kept winning rounds you could dial faster than 11.20 but not slower. I?m not sure what year the shoe polish started where you can dial differently each round. They got away from running off national records because they wanted to make it competitive for everyone.

This proposal can be manipulated just as easily as the current "shoe polish" format.
Why do we keep trying to fix what isn't broken...NHRA has no problem filling the quotas that they choose. Class racing has MUCH bigger problems than this. |
