I remember when I was in High School the police Dept in the area (Seat Pleasant, Md.) had 2 of them. A 4 door and a 2 door sedan Plymouth Savoy. We thought they were the uglist cars we ever saw.....lol. Both were black all over and the slant six cylinder 4 door cars were black and white. Several of the guys I ran with were friends with some of the guys on the force and we got to look under the hoods of the two 383 cars. Man those 2 X 4 barrels looked so cool to guys who had just gotten their liscense only a few months before and were driving cars you wouldnt want to be caught dead in today.....lol. The 6 cyls were the town cars and the 2 383 cars were the hi way cars.
A guy name Al Procopio who lived near my school had the first 1962 413 Xram car I ever saw but it was a track only SS/SA car. His company built Cecil County drag strip, Capitol raceway, and Aquasco speed way. They made quite an impression on young minds back then. Last edited by X-TECH MAN; 11-22-2009 at 09:41 PM. |

The pictured car belongs to a friend of mine. It is a 413 Max Wedge with the lower compression 11:1 Engine.
It carried a factory rating of 410 HP..... It is currently factored at 395 HP and although it was just built it has run 1.0 plus under. The owner also runs a 66 Dodge Hemi Stocker and has cleaned my clock numerous times at both National and Divisionals! ![]() |

Thanks for the information, John! That's a fitting "sister car" to the D Stock Automatic car of Bennett/Widuch!

The first GatorNationals in 1970 was won by a '62 Plymouth 383/343. Tommy Callahan drove it & Frank Sulc was his partner. The car was called the Villain........I always liked the car......
Joe Kenney also ran a '62 Plymouth wagon at that time. It was called the "Trick Tank".......Joe was a good guy and liked to have fun. I can recall drinking a couple beers at the "beer stand" with him at Sanair.......Yes they sold beer in the pits and by the case! They also had a bar in the tower......

There are a couple more 343 hp. 62 Plymouths that have been running NHRA even before the Bennett D/SA.
