When Camaro and Firebird went away (2000 model year), NHRA was approached with the prospect of waiving the "must have been available with a 4-cylinder or V6", specifically to allow Cavaliers and Sunfires. The argument that won Danny and Bruce over was that earlier J-bodies had been available with V6 engines, and the later versions were essentially the same car. Also, with Camaro and Firebird disappearing, both GM and NHRA wanted a replacement, and J-car fit the bill.
