Don't let the laptop thing scare you. Yes, a handheld is great to have in the car to adjust rpm quickly if you want to. The laptop is nice for saving tuneups and for adjusting in more areas as mentioned. You don't need a fancy or expensive laptop either. The program isn't a memoory hog. I would suggest finding a racer in your area that can show you. If not possible, try the msd trailer. Bring your lptop with and ask them to walk you through it . e mail me with any questions that might come up. We stickshift racers have to well, stick together.
