I didn't think it was a strength consideration, but a cost consideration since lightened flanges, when offered, are an extra cost option.

I broke a Strange axle in a 10 second, 2,850lb footbrake Challenger after about 8-10 years and thousands of runs. A friend who had the car before had a 440/4 speed, but only for a year or two. But I never had any issues with the 2-3 sets of Moser axles and spools I've bought.
