I run the JAZ poly seats in my car, and have them through bolted. The back of the seats are bolted to a brace fabed off my cage. The seats are very comfortable, and rock solid.

If you are tall stay away from any of the poly seats. The aluminum ones give you more head room by a few inches.

We have used the poly and the aluminum in our race cars over the years. The inserts in the poly seats are worthless and as some have noted here, bolting them through is the way to go plus making sure you have the back of the seat supported/bolted to the roll cage cross brace. With the seat installed this way, it does a good job and I think is very comfortable. My boys like the Kirkey seats in their racecars and at least with the optional covers they aren't too bad - w/o the cover the things are rough on the bottom of your spine in my opinion. I also have found that the forward bolster part of the Kirkey seat kind of catches my outer thigh area and tends to hurt eventually. If you have the chance I would see if someone will let you sit in their car to see how they feel to you.

On a stock floorpan car how are you mounting the seats? On thru bolting the plastic seats are you using carriage style smooth head bolts? Are you drillng thru where the inserts are?

I welded some threaded inserts into the floor pan similar to the stock seat mounts. I drilled the threads out of the seat inserts an used a 3/8 grade 8 bolt with a large flat washer to bolt through the bottom of the seat to the floor. 1 half inch bolt through the back into the cross bar

I think the problem that Tech & SFI has had with the Jaz poly seats is the Hot Knife used to cut the openings for the belts would leave a sharp edge and chafe the belt and weaken them. I was told by a very creditable source that is what happened and added to the results of Lee Shepherd's crash, hence the inspections for seat belts. In recent years they have gone to milling the openings out with a mill instead of the hot knife. You still need to be careful with those seat openings and belt chafing. The thread inserts are another problem that should be addressed. Those seats are almost as comfortable as a form fitting foam fill.

Are stock factory seat adjusters legal? I've had a car with a poly seat that had the poly seat bolted to the adjusters. |
