GM Performance stuff is always good. You might question their choice of camshaft, or carburetor (because you personally like something else), but the stuff itself is ALWAYS top quality. Remember, they were the people who designed and developed the engine in the first place, so these "commemorative" engines (L88 & ZL) gave them a chance to correct the few flaws the originals had. The one you show looks to me like it would be a killer street engine, in a larger car like a Chevelle.

This engine will go in my 78 year old Dads car. This is an original 68 SS /396 and he wants to take the original engine out and put on a stand and do something different. He would build his own but finding a virgin core and then getting all the machine work done ,he thought this was just a good alternative and everything new and complete. Then the original engine will stay all intact.

Using this engine would be a really smart move. I'm a couple of years younger than your father and can still do a lot of this work, but I'm getting really slow at it.
Could not do it for $11,500. Purchased an L88 in the early eighties from GM for a boat we were working on. Decided to take it apart to check everything. Found an extra rod bolt in the pan along with the Detroit News. I think the date on the paper was pretty close to when they assembled the motor. ![]() |
